What light color helps you fall asleep in the bedroom comes down to a single number: the color temperature in Kelvin. It describes whether a light feels warm and calm or cool and alert. For the evening, a simple rule of thumb applies: the lower the Kelvin value, the warmer the light and the better the body can unwind.
The short answer
For the bedroom in the evening, warm white light below 2,700 Kelvin is ideal. In the last hour before going to sleep, values between 1,800 and 2,200 Kelvin are best. This light has almost no blue light component and resembles the glow of a candle. Cool light of about 4,000 Kelvin or more, on the other hand, keeps you awake and does not belong near the bed.

Bedside table: warm and dimmable
At your bedside, the warmest level is what matters. Here you should aim for 1,800 to 2,200 Kelvin. The light should be directed and glare-free, allowing you to reach to the side without waking the whole room. A portable lamp offers a practical advantage: you can bring it closer for reading and dim it to a low level afterward.
Keep two things in mind. First, look for precise dimming down to very low levels so that the light doesn't feel too intense at night. Second, choose a warm light color that gets warmer as it dims instead of just growing darker.
Reading light: bright enough, but not cool
For reading, you need more brightness than for pure atmospheric lighting, but the light color should remain warm. The range between 2,200 and 2,700 Kelvin works well. This allows you to clearly read the page without activating your body again.
The position is crucial. The light is best directed from the side or from behind over your shoulder, preventing shadows on the page and avoiding glare. A swiveling head helps direct the beam of light precisely onto your book without disturbing a partner sleeping next to you.
Ceiling light and ambient light: warm white as a base
The general lighting in the room should not be brighter or cooler than necessary in the evening. Here, too, stay with warm white, around 2,700 Kelvin. A dimmable ceiling light or a pendant light over a seating area creates a calm foundation that you can dim way down in the evening.

The right light color is not a static value; it shifts over the course of the evening. In practice, a simple routine helps:
