An interview with designer duo Timon & Melchior Grau

The design process of the new Parrot luminaires

What was your initial vision behind Parrot when it was first developed?

Parrot is a figure in the room, a friendly luminaire with a head and feet that moves around the room and accompanies you. Our approach was to open up and loosen up the static nature of classic floor lamps. Parrot is designed for different settings and moves between these locations. In doing so, it unfolds its sculptural presence in the room.

What fascinated you about the idea of designing a mobile, freestanding luminaire?

Mobility was central from the very beginning. We wanted a luminaire for our own studio that was easy to carry, intuitive to move and flexible to use - like a personal lighting instrument. It was important to us that Parrot was not tied to one corner, but could be moved to wherever it was needed - to the table, the sofa, the armchair, the bed or anywhere else in the room.

Parrot is celebrating its 5th anniversary this year - what have been your personal Parrot highlights over the past few years?

It was great to see how differently people use Parrot, in ateliers, living rooms, studios, and exhibitions. One highlight was the Eventide performance at the Julia Stoschek Foundation, which we illuminated with Parrots. It was nice to see that Parrot is more than just a functional product, but also a cultural object.

Another highlight was the many unique images by artists who have interpreted Parrot artistically. The series of images by Torso, Alessio Bolzoni, and Sarah Blais, for example, are very special.

Why did you decide to completely rework Parrot now?

After five years with Parrot, we wanted to incorporate valuable experience and customer feedback into an even stronger next generation. The essence of Parrot remains the same, but the lighting experience and production quality have been taken to a new level. We have been working on this for a long time, and it feels like the right moment for an update; technically, aesthetically, and atmospherically.

Was there a specific impulse from the market or by users? What have you learned about Parrot from customers and architects in recent years?

Many people wanted Parrot to become an even better reading light. Others wanted Parrot to have a Fire Vibe to create even more cozy moods. We noticed how important the topic of lighting atmosphere has become and the desire to connect light even more strongly with emotion, with soft transitions and a warmer, natural color gradient.

What specific innovations are there in the new Parrot series? What is new about its light?

The new Parrot has a precise, large reading lens. The light distribution is even and glare-free. This makes Parrot ideal for reading. At the same time, you can now turn the head 360° and project a soft glow onto the wall.

With a simple click of a switch, you can switch from clear reading light to warmer, atmospheric lighting. This allows you to focus on your work during the day and create a cozy atmosphere in the evening with the same light. This versatility is unique to Parrot.

How have the design language and materiality changed?

In terms of design language, we remain very faithful to our initial Parrot concept. We see the update more as an evolution than a revolution. The figure consists of a large foot, a long, slender body, and a movable head. A light disc dances tangentially on the body. The head curves precisely into the lens, with sharp transitions and fine details that emphasize the high quality of workmanship.

The new Parrot consists of aluminum parts that are manufactured using high-precision milling. We have chosen not to use paint or powder coating in order to highlight the clarity and precision of the surface. Instead, we have developed new anodized aluminum finishes, including an elegant warm black reminiscent of bronze sculptures, a matte silver, and even a polished version that emphasizes the sculptural quality of the luminaire.

How was the Parrot Table lamp created?

Parrot Table is for people who want a functional desk lamp, but with a sculptural rather than technical look. Parrot is particularly versatile thanks to its indirect light and various lighting moods. It is a reading lamp and ambient light in one. This makes it easy to switch from productive work to a cozy atmosphere. This versatility makes Parrot unique.

Are there any new use cases or target groups?

Parrot Table opens up new possibilities, from the home office or library to the bedside table or hotel room. Parrot is now even more versatile. It appeals to people who love design, but also to those who are simply looking for good lighting for their lives.

Another new feature is that we now offer Parrot Floor as a wired version for those who want to use Parrot in the same place and keep it permanently connected. This also opens up new possibilities for new spaces, such as hotels and workplaces, and makes planning easier.

What are your wishes for the future of Parrot?

Parrot is a charming and quiet icon. Our goal is for Parrot to continue to develop its beauty and depth over time, without imposing itself, but with a self-assured modesty. For us, this is the power of essential quality.

We hope that Parrot will continue to inspire and accompany many people in their everyday lives, in their homes, and in their special moments. Parrot remains what it always was: a shining character.
